Most of what reaches us is paint or soot: a beam someone painted black at some point, or one darkened by decades under an open hearth. Water damage is a different, less common case — a roof leak, a burst pipe, old flooding — and it leaves a different signature on the timber. Rather than an even black, you typically get patchy, uneven discolouration: darker in the areas that stayed wettest longest, lighter where it dried faster, sometimes with a blotchy or tide-marked look rather than a flat colour.
Why water-damaged oak looks the way it does
Oak is naturally high in tannic acid, and tannins react with moisture — and with any iron nearby, such as old nails or fixings — to produce dark staining that can look alarmingly black close up. It's a chemical reaction in the surface of the wood, not necessarily a sign that the timber itself has failed structurally, but it does need to be looked at properly rather than assumed.
What has to happen before any cosmetic work
Before treating the surface of a water-damaged beam, the first job is establishing that the timber is actually sound: fully dried out, with no ongoing damp source, and no soft or rotten sections where the damage has gone deeper than surface staining. That's a judgement call we make from your photographs — but a genuinely water-affected beam is exactly the case where one image isn't enough. We'll usually ask for several clear, well-lit photographs from more than one angle before we're confident either way.
How the surface treatment applies once the timber is sound
Once we're confident the timber itself is stable, the same process we use across the rest of our work applies here too — brush-applied and water-based, with nothing sanded, nothing blasted, nothing to clear up. Because it works on the surface rather than through it, it's suited to brightening uneven staining and bringing tone back across a patchy, water-marked beam without removing sound wood to do it, and without the fumes or mess of a chemical strip.

- Confirm the leak or source of water is actually fixed before anything cosmetic is attempted — treating the surface while the beam is still getting wet is wasted work.
- Check for soft, spongy, or crumbling timber, not just discolouration — that's a structural question, not a finishing one, and may need a different tradesperson first.
- Photograph the beam once it's fully dry and send it to us — we'll tell you honestly whether it's a straightforward surface job or something we'd want a few more photographs of before we're confident.
