Most enquiries about black beams start with a photo and one question: can this actually come off? The honest answer depends on what's actually going on. A film of gloss paint sitting on top of the timber is one problem. A dark stain or bitumastic seal that's been soaking into open oak grain for decades is a different problem entirely — and it's the one that catches out most DIY attempts and most generic stripping.
Paint sits on top. Stain goes in.
Paint is a film — it has a top surface and a bottom surface, and in principle it can be lifted off cleanly without touching what's underneath. A stain behaves nothing like that. Once dark stain, creosote, or old bitumastic sealant has sat on an open-grained beam for years, it doesn't stop at the surface — it works its way into the timber's own structure. At that point, the colour isn't really "on" the beam any more. It's part of it.
Why blasting and chemical stripping fall short here
Blasting only ever removes what's on the surface. On a beam where the stain has soaked in, taking off the top layer just exposes more stained timber underneath — so the instinct is to blast harder, or go again, chasing colour that keeps reappearing. Every pass takes a little more of the actual beam with it. Chemical strippers have the same limit from a different direction: they're formulated to break down a surface coating, not to draw pigment back out of timber it's already absorbed into. You can strip a beam like this for a full day and still be looking at patchy, uneven colour once it's dry — because the stripper only ever touched the part of the problem that was sitting on top.
A safety note before anyone touches anything
Older paintwork on beams occasionally turns out to be lead-based paint, which is one reason it shouldn't be dry-sanded, ground back, or otherwise disturbed by hand — disturbing it mechanically is what turns it into an airborne risk. On some older properties, the plasterwork immediately around a beam can also contain asbestos, which is one more reason blasting isn't something to attempt as a DIY job, or hand to anyone who hasn't asked the question first.

Before you start anything
- Photograph the beam in good light, including any areas where the colour looks especially deep or uneven.
- Note whether the beam has been painted, or whether the colour looks like it's genuinely in the grain.
- If a small patch has already been tried with a blaster or chemical stripper, tell us — an uneven test patch changes what we're actually looking at, and it's useful for us to know before anything else happens.
