We hear a version of the same sentence on almost every first call: "the beams are lovely, but they make the room feel dark." Usually they're right, and usually the beams themselves aren't the problem — the black paint, bitumastic stain, or decades of soot sitting on top of them is. Underneath, more often than not, there's a lighter, warmer timber waiting to come back.
Why the beam went black in the first place
Very few beams were built black. Exposed oak was routinely painted or stained dark in the 19th and 20th centuries — sometimes to hide older repairs or mismatched timber, sometimes simply because dark beams against white plaster was the fashion of the time. Older still, open-hearth soot did the same job over centuries without any paint involved at all. Either way, what you're looking at is a surface treatment sitting on top of the wood, not the wood's natural colour.
Why DIY sanding and chemical peelers usually go wrong
A beam looks like a big, forgiving piece of wood, which is exactly why DIY attempts tend to cause the damage they were trying to fix. A sander or angle grinder doesn't know where old paint ends and 300-year-old surface grain begins — it takes both, unevenly, and the result is patchy tone, exposed fibre, and no way to put it back. Chemical peelers avoid the abrasion but bring their own problems: fumes in a room you're living in, residue that has to be fully neutralised, and coatings that were never designed to come off gently in the first place.
Brushes, not blasting — what the process actually looks like
Our process is applied entirely with brushes — no sandblasting, no grinding, no solvents. It's water-based and non-hazardous, which means no fumes to ventilate and no need to move furniture out of the house, let alone move out of it. Because nothing is stripped or removed, the beam's own carpenter's marks and surface history stay exactly where they are; the treatment brightens the tone that's currently sitting over the top of them. There's no replastering or redecorating needed afterwards, because nothing around the beam is disturbed in the process.
What to check before you start
- Is the dark colour paint, stain, or soot — or genuinely the colour of the timber underneath? This changes what's possible and is worth confirming before anyone starts work.
- Has any part of the beam been previously sanded or chemically stripped? Bare, already-worked timber behaves differently and is worth assessing on its own terms.
- How many beams, and how high? Room size and ceiling height are the main drivers of how long a job takes, not how dark the beam currently looks.
